Before food decays, could you have a message ‘your cooked meat is starting to smell bad’ or similar, and highlight nearly rotten items like meat in the same way that damaged items like swords are highlighted (perhaps yellow, not red :).
Then I get to quickly eat them (perhaps for reduced benefit).
